(Or rediscovering) Hamlet - Nicki Greenberg's beautiful new version, thanks to the fabulous Snarkattack, who invited me along to see Nicki talk about the creative process behind the book.

Eating

  • An enormous serve of bangers'n'mash and a nourishing pint of Kilkenny at the Town Hall one dismal Tuesday evening.
  • A "Chachi" - chianina meatball sandwich - another brioche donut and some amazing chocolate tart at Beatrix, which Essjay has reviewed.
  • A lazy Sunday lunch at The Crimean. The Polish hunter's stew (bigos) was just the thing to revive me after a chilly bike ride.
  • Generous piles of fried food with oodles of chillies and sichuan peppercorns at Sichuan House
  • Succulent suckling pig at Liberteene.
  • An array of bright, zesty flavours at Chin Chin, where the only problem was having to choose only some of the items from what looks to be a menu that is all hits, no filler.

Housekeeping

I should probably pay more attention to the physical housekeeping instead of noodling around here. Thanks for the feedback on the new look – I will get back to “real” posting soon.  Perhaps I can blame post-Masterchef blues for my current lack of inspiration.

In the meantime, I’ve added a new box to the left sidebar, which I hope will prompt me to update at least that regularly, as I’ve titled it “This week I’ve been”.  Once the week is over, it’ll be archived on my new page, This Week.

Actually, now that I think about it, it’s a bit of a cop-out. Oh, well!

New theme

After a fun meeting this afternoon with a bunch of experienced bloggers, I’ve been emboldened to try a new look. Unlike other themes I’ve used in the past, this look is super-customisable. Fab when I get the hang of it; right now, I’m just pleased to see that I haven’t completely lost the plot.

Things will change. Hopefully, for the better.

New theme

I’ve been messing around with the blog, so you might notice things look a little different. For a start, the new theme has a “rotating header”, so you might see any of three different images when you visit the site.

It could be my dodgy internet connection, or my browser, but when I’ve tested it the header images haven’t always appeared. If the same happens for you, try refreshing the page. If that doesn’t work, I’d really appreciate it if you could leave a comment (would be handy if you tell me what browser you use).

I hope you find the new layout easy to navigate!

The big move

Welcome to my new home!  I’ve bitten the bullet and registered a domain, and set aside a day to get all of my old blog moved here.  It’s only taken an hour so far, which is much less time than I’d anticipated.  There are still metaphorical boxes to be unpacked and I’m sure I’ll do some tweaking to the layout in the future (please don’t hold me to that, though… I’ve said it before and have merely changed WordPress themes!), but it’s already starting to feel like home.

I’ll keep posting at the old blog for a while, but won’t do so indefinitely.

New theme

I’ve become slightly addicted to widgets.  My commitment to a clean desktop is at risk of being compromised by this, so I went in search of widgets that would go in other places.  Cricinfo offers a number of options, so I added their “live score” widget to this blog.  Unfortunately, the default is to add it as a post, so I tried experiementing with making it a blog-widget.  This worked, but the right-hand side of the score box was cut off due to the restricted column width of the old theme.

What to do?

As much as I liked the black-ness of the old theme, I started browsing around WordPress for an off-the-rack theme that would allow me to keep my custom header, but also give the Cricinfo widget room to breathe.  This is the result.

As I have a couple of weeks of holiday at my disposal, I am thinking of playing around with CSS to see if I learn anything.  In the meantime – and, given my penchant for procrastination, this could be a long time – this is the new look.  It’s by no means perfect, but it will do for now.
