This week I have been

Campaign Ruby, by Jessica Rudd, for our online book club Better Well Read Than Dead. She certainly loves name-dropping her labels.

Watching

The Plan, which reminded me that I haven't dropped enough hints to C recently about how much I want the BSG box set on Blu-Ray.

...to my great disappointment, that Jared Leto is in 30 Seconds To Mars. Why, Jared, why?

Eating

  • Mee pok at Coconut House
  • Matt Stone's fresh, Spring-y quinoa salad from this month's Australian Gourmet Traveller. (I decided that dinner was more than a "light meal", though, so added some fried haloumi for a meat-free Monday.)
  • Suckling pig rolls at Collins Quarter, which are on for another three or four weeks on Wednesdays (and at $5 a pop are a bargain). They will be followed by Spring lamb!
  • Baguette with pork rillettes from Le Traiteur - the crunchy, acid pickles go so perfectly with the rillettes
  • Eggplant with minced pork from KL Bunga Raya
  • Ipoh Hor Fun (again!) at Gurney Drive. Perfect on a wet and steamy September Saturday.  C had the Hainanese Chicken Rice and the rice was beautifully flavoured.
  • Some sticky ribs and fish-flavour pork from Fucshia Dunlop's Sichuan Cooking
  • Compost cookie batter, with Lanka mix, wasabi peas - thanks to Penny for that idea! - Twisties, Mars Bar, Clinkers and Oreos. Oh, and some Special K.  That'll teach me to try to be super-organised for morning tea. (Some did make it to the oven, I promise)

Top Cop

Chief Commissioner Christine Nixon has resigned, and her place has been taken by former Assistant Commissioner Simon Overland.

Every time I see it in print, I read: Chief Commissioner Overlord.

Off the radar

So, it’s been a while.  So long, in fact, that there are snowflakes on WordPress (way to embrace your southern-hemisphere bloggers, WP!) and a number of other changes that I just won’t bother with unless they bother me.

What have I been doing?  Nothing exciting.  Reports.  Putting films on the list, and then watching as they disappear from cinemas before I get to see them.  Trying not to procrastinate.  Finishing reports.  Trying to balance sleep and not-sleep (not always effectively).  Catching up on some DVDs: The Band’s Visit, Wordplay, the rest of Battlestar, both seasons of Spaced, some 30 Rock and some revisited Arrested Development.

What’s in store?

  • three more teaching days (which are now “in training” days, which means I have to write three days of extras this weekend.   I guess the holiday feeling starts… later?)
  • a holiday!  Yay!  Sixteen days in Malaysia.  Beaches.  Food.  Lots of food.  I’m trying to figure out what to eat first
  • hopefully a few films.  I do want to see Burn After Reading, and – now that I’ve broken the James Bond embargo (thanks, Daniel Craig) – there’s no real reason not to see Quantam of Solace.  Can’t wait for Frost/Nixon and Milk
  • some rest.  I feel like splodging out on the couch for at least a month

Band name poetry

The Arthouse band lineups often read really well.  On some days I think that if I were of a more creative bent I could write a novel based on the roster of names (or, at least, a short story). This one suggests both a plot and a couple of ideas to pick up for cover design:

arthouse-1

This one is a bit too bleak for me to think about at the moment (even the effect of the rain on the chalkboard seems to fit with the overall vibe):

arthouse-2

It also works as a commentary on the financial situation – I can see it as the caption for a photo of AIG executives.

I’m embarrassed to admit…

…to how much I like the Ten HD ad with Craig McLachlan.  He seems to be channelling Neil Patrick Harris.  Should I also be embarrassed to admit that this is a good thing?

I even searched the Ten HDTV site for a link to the ad.  Guess what?  It’s not there.  What a waste…

Meltdown for Dummies

The Age is running a handy little multimedia page called “Economics Meltdown 101″.  I particularly like this speculation, under the heading “What is the US rescue plan?”:

Even the amount nominated, almost US$150 billion more than the US has spent on the war in Iraq, was not chosen in any scientific way.  A US treasury spokeswoman told Forbes magazine: “It’s not based on any particular data point.  We just wanted to choose a really large number.”

I’ll remember that next time I’m in wage negotiations…

Rufus’ big adventure

Rufus has a tendency to bother us early in the morning. His body clock is set to the earliest time we get up during the week and does not alter to accommodate later weekend waking. He’s not content to just sit quietly on the end of the bed, or even to sit noisily in the middle of the bed. He gets right up by the pillow and gently paws my face. Well, gently at first. As minutes go by he becomes more insistent and I usually get up before he nips me on the chin.

This morning was different. Not only did Rufus let us sleep in, but he did not come running when we got up. We called him and… nothing. We checked the igloo, the carry case, the wardrobes, under the couches, the pantry… nothing. Not a mew; not a scratch. Curiouser and curiouser. By now, we were getting a bit desperate. Each of us checked the places the other had checked. Nothing.

Face your manga

OK, so there are lots of things I need to have done by the time this day is over.  Creating a highly flawed manga version of myself wasn’t even close to being on the list.  Still, it was fun, even if I made some choices that I was then unable to figure out the “undo” for (the goth lipstick and alien logo, for ex).

Back…

I’m finally feeling human again.  Feeling better, apparently, than I actually am if my latest xrays are anything to go by.  Still, I had enough energy for a walk into the city today (although not enough for the walk home).  And, as the below meme indicates, I am regaining my interest in food!

Going through the 100 was an interesting exercise.  What would I rule out completely?  Why?  I eat loads of different animals and am generally willing to try any part of these animals… but not horse.  It’s irrational, but that’s just how it is.  As for roadkill, if I were desperate, then I’d eat it.  I have, however, approached this list as “would I choose to eat it” and the answer for roadkill is a resounding “no”.

What to do
1) Copy this list into your blog or journal, including these instructions.
2) Bold all the items you’ve eaten. (In the case of this style sheet, I’ve had to change the colour of the items I’ve eaten in order for it to make any visual sense.)
3) Cross out any items that you would never consider eating.
4) Optional extra: Post a comment at Very Good Taste linking to your results.

Misread

Yahoo’s current headline is Deadliest Job in America.  The teaser line reads:

The most dangerous job in the U.S. is more hazardous than even ranching and logging.

Blogging?  I thought.  Blogging is dangerous?  Hang on, blogging is a job?

Then I read it again.

If you really need to know what the most dangerous job is, click the link.  I’m going to predict that you will be disappointed.
